Bus Walk – Plaxtol to Tonbridge

This route is cover on the Ordnance Survey Explorer map 148 Maidstone and the Medway Towns and the Ordnance Survey Explorer map 136 High Weald – Royal Tunbridge Wells.

This was not my intended route for the day but the rain and muddy fields made me change to a road walk.

I took the Autocar bus 222 from Tonbridge  to Plaxtol and got off in the middle of the village and walked up the hill past the Papermakers Arms

and turned right at the T junction with the old signpost

towards Plaxtol Church and Plaxtol War memorial

This Church is unusual in that it is not dedicated to a patron saint but is merely called Plaxtol Parish Church. Apparently this is because the Church was built at the time of Oliver Cromwell.

Retracing your steps back down the hill and going straight on at the junction you will come to the Village School now the memorial hall

and the Wesleyan Church built in 1893 now a private house.

Further down you see Betenson Cottages a group of 4 Almshouses built in 1868

Continuing down the lane you come to a public footpath on the left

There were a lot of game birds.

The path was very muddy and at this stage I decided to change my original route and return to Tonbridge by road.

Muddy Path

Having survived the muddy path I went to look at the Evangelical Church in Dunk’s Green. This was originally opened as a Baptist Chapel in 1838. (Note my umbrella at the top of the picture)

Going back towards the village there is a sculptured chair on the green opposite the Kentish Rifleman Pub.
