Gillingham to Chatham

This walk can be found on Ordnance Survey Explorer map 148.

This walk can be started either in Chatham or Gillingham and is 2.3 miles long. Buses 116, 101, 182 and 326 cover both Chatham and Gillingham. Buses 140, 190 and 191 can be found at Chatham. For other buses try traveline.

Go onto the Great Lines opposite Medway Park and take the main path up the hill.

As you reach the top of the hill you can enjoy the view over Luton, Chatham and Rochester.

At the bottom of the hill walk across the car park and enter Fort Amherst at the Barrier Road. If you are starting from Chatham join the walk here.

Continue to Khartoum Road and turn right, walk past the main entrance into Fort Amherst and take the next right past the back of the cafe. Continue up the hill past Lord Nelson.

There is a little walk through the woods for the children.

Nearly at the top of the hill.

At the top of the hill you can do a little detour through a tunnel to see the Amphitheater in the Spur Battery.

There is also a viewing point.

Back on the main path cross the bridge over the barrier ditch. Go through the gate from Fort Amherst into the Great Lines and turn left at the Naval War Memorial. Continue on the path past Brompton school and turn left. You can walk across the grass to the park entrance.
